It's pledge drive time, and this week has a little bit of extra drama. Leo cuts his green electricity bill, and KPFT raises money with Pink Ribbons Project to provide mammograms for women without adequate funds. Leo re-visits the "Truther" controversy from the week before, giving plenty of plugs for fellow Texan Alex Jones' websites and paraphernalia while emphasizing his own Patriotic Independence from said views. A Jones acolyte declares a KPFT boycott on several forums and Leo encourages KPFT listeners to "Break the Boycott" - and they do, responding with 4x the New Capital Show's goal.

We got word that Michael Mendenhall, who worked on New Capital Show, was killed by a drunk driver, and John Daido Loori, one of the world's great Zen teachers passed away. Leo reflects on their lives, and then turns his attention to the sordid story of how an ex deputy mayor of LA could take a seat on the board of one of the largest pension funds in the world, and then turn that gig into a $50 million payment. This should be a national scandal, but it doesn't even seem to be a big story in California. Americans have become jaded over the pilfering of capital resources whenever, wherever, and however that occurs.

A reader's comments from Andrew Sullivan's blog The Daily Dose strike a chord with listeners: Obama is now the recipient of Jungian shadow projections by the right? For Leo, it's all about projects, and as the President cancels useless projects in favor of useful projects, the right cannot bear the truth: their projects suck. Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, & Mary fame passes on, but not before she spends a lifetime of showing how to advocate your views passionately, effectively, and non-violently. GM showing definite signs of life, and we're not hearing much these days about how Obama botched that one, are we?

Lie to me

After a fantastic speech to the children of our Nation (even Republicans agreed so), the President took his momentum to the Congress in an effort to clarify his vision of health care reform, shore up some votes, and put the debate back on a civil trajectory. As usual, however, the Republicans doubled down on lunacy and disrespect of the office by having one of their members (presumably not coerced) shout down the President by calling him a liar. Leo hopes and expects that this one incident, representative and indicative of the last few months of town hall fiascos, will be a wake-up call for the Democrats and the White House. Leo does some news and takes your calls.

Leo tackles the Right Wing's latest buffoonery in their effort to keep kids home from school to avoid watching the President's address to, and therefore indoctrination of, our children. How can you ever repair a child's view of the President after teaching them to show such disrespect for our elected leader? And as the Right Wing continues to fail our children so does Texas, who recently decided to eliminate Sex Education in the class. Though eliminating Sex-Ed in the classroom may help Right Wingers realize precisely how evolution actually works, the responsible parents in Texas are outraged by such ignorance. Leo takes matters into his own hands and spends part of the show teaching Sex Ed 101, since our State is incapable. We do some news and take your calls.

Leo finally decides to address healthcare reform head-on, as the government does the same thing. Leo finds similarities in the failure of private banking intermediaries to do their jobs and the failure of private healthcare intermediaries to do their jobs. If the intermediaries can't successfully intermediate at a national level and achieve their stated purpose, why are they entitled to support? In the new economy, Leo notes a new report from McKinsey & Company that finds the largest gains to be made in energy efficiency are in...energy efficiency.

Seats at the Table

Lots of people shouting for a seat at the table to have a voice in how new capital will be raised and how it will be allocated. Funny, these are the very same people who caused the gigantic, and now catastrophic, shift in capital raising and allocation over the past few decades. All countries need a healthy balance between private and public projects, and capital is raised and allocated differently for both of these. How could we have gotten so out of balance?

Harry Hayes, Director of Houston Solid Waste, joins us by phone to talk about progress with the new single stream pilot program. Director Hayes says it's a clear success, already in 10,000 households, with plans to reach an additional 50,000 of Houston's 375,000 households. But between the lines, it sounds like the program is struggling to find funding. Why is recycling expected to earn its keep? No other municipal program is.
